This volume presents the latest information from international leaders as well as emerging experts on how to make Single Session Therapy (SST) efficient and effective.

Key topics involve productive mindsets and multi-theoretical clinical methods with different problems and populations (including individuals, families, adolescents, children, and couples), as well as walk-in and by-appointment access, digital services, implementation and training, the structure and aesthetics of a single session, and connections to sports coaching.

    Biography

Flavio Cannistrà, Psy. D. is the Co-Director of the Italian Center for Single Session Therapy, the coauthor/editor of Single Session Therapy: Principles and Practice and Brief Therapy Conversations and was the co-organizer of the 4th International Symposium on SST, held in Rome in November 2023.

Michael F. Hoyt, Ph.D., is in independent practice in Mill Valley, CA. He is the author of Brief Therapy and Beyond and Single Session Therapy: A Clinical Introduction to Principles and Practices and is the recipient of various professional awards.

“Single Session Therapy (SST) will change your conception of psychotherapy. This book describes how SST can be applied across diverse clinical populations and across varied countries. It highlights specific ways to motivate and engage clients. No matter what number of sessions you see clients, this book is highly recommended.”

Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., author of The Evolution of Cognitive Behavior Therapy: A Personal and Professional Journey with Don Meichenbaum and Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention, Miami

“A compelling collection of clinical, scientific, forward-looking chapters from prominent single-session therapy (SST) leaders and contributors throughout the world, including editors Cannistrà and Hoyt. The hope and utility of the SST mindset shines through and makes this book a keeper for any clinician who wants to honor the fact that most clients prefer and choose fewer sessions to more. A timely, practical, culturally responsive resource for practitioners of all theoretical orientations.”

John J. Murphy, Ph.D., Author of Solution-Focused Therapy and Professor Emeritus, University of Central Arkansas

“I highly recommend Single Session Therapies: Why and How One-at-a-Time Mindsets Are Effective. Chapters discuss different models and techniques of SST and how they can be implemented in different settings, communities, and countries. Most of all, it pays homage to the Mental Research Institute belief that the goal of therapy is not to resolve the multitude of putative deep-seated psychological dysfunctions and pathologies that trouble people, but to help them get “unstuck” and subsequently get on with their lives!”

Terry Soohoo, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, California State University - East Bay; former Director of Training, Mental Research Institute, Palo Alto, CA

“The commitment of the authors in this book to circulating stories of many ways that just and responsive one-at-a-time therapy services have been implemented in a wide variety of contexts around the world inspires a future in psychotherapy that makes room for questioning the usual and taken-for-granted ways of doing things.”

Karen Young, M.S.W., R.S.W., Director of the Windz Centre, Ontario, Canada; and international Narrative Therapy trainer
