Sacchidananda Mukherjee
Dr Mukherjee is an Associate Professor at the NIPFP. Before NIPFP, he was with IWMI and WWF-India. He is working on public finance, environmental economics and water resources management issues in India and published research papers in national and international journals. His recent co-edited books, viz., "Environmental Scenario in India: Successes and Predicaments" and "Environmental Challenges and Governance: Diverse perspectives from Asia" are published by Routledge.
Biography
Sacchidananda Mukherjee is an Associate Professor at the National Institute ofPublic Finance and Policy (NIPFP), New Delhi. Before joining NIPFP, he was with
International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Hyderabad and World Wide Fund for
Nature-India, New Delhi. He is working on public finance, environmental economics and
water resources management issues in India for last one decade. Dr. Mukherjee has studied
at the Madras School of Economics, Chennai (Ph.D. in Economics from University of Madras)
and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (M.A. in Economics). He has conducted research
projects funded by various Departments of Government of India and International
Development Agencies and published his research papers in national and international peer
reviewed journals. Dr. Mukherjee is member of various professional associations including
Indian Society for Ecological Economics and reviewer of couple of national and
international journals. His recent co-edited books, viz., "Environmental Scenario in
India: Successes and Predicaments" and "Environmental Challenges and
Governance: Diverse perspectives from Asia" are published by Routledge, UK &
USA.

Political competition and human development: Evidence from the Indian states

Recently, it has been argued that political competition may have similar effects on economic performance as market competition. This study empirically examines this proposition by linking political competition with the Human Development Index (HDI) of the Indian states. The findings suggest that politically competitive governments perform well along the HDI.
