I first began to focus on understanding reading while I was a doctoral student at UCLA in the early 1960s. I wanted to understand the process well enough so that I could help teachers help children become effective readers. I became convinced that studying reading as language would reveal a good deal about the process. To study reading as receptive language, I knew I would have to observe real readers reading real texts. Otherwise, I wouldn't be examining the complete language process.
